Giàng Dũng Sài, a H’Mông musician, speaks about his lifelong connection with traditional instruments and the way music accompanies both daily life and community gatherings.
Translation:
The instruments I play are nine kinds, and I have been playing them since I was a child, even before my own children were born. I often played while working in the fields and in the forest. I know all the different instruments, and I very much want to pass this knowledge on to my children and grandchildren. This khèn piece is just a tune for social gatherings with friends, not a funeral piece, because funeral music cannot be played inside the house.
